You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger (2010) ***

Typical Woody Allen comedy, set in London. Best one-liner: Gemma Jones declaring that dead women "are often the stiffest competition".

Whatever Works (2009) ***

Woody Allen's well-known fetish for sexy young women is very much in evidence in this entertaining comedy about a 62-year-old misantropic old fart (Larry David) marrying a nubile young nymphet (Evan Rachel Wood), who is 40 years younger than him. Witty and very intelligent, but also a bit creepy.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) ***

Woody Allen moves to Spain and the results are both refreshing and entertaining. It's a vaguely Henry Jamesian story about two more-or-less innocent American women discovering love and sex among ultra-sophisticated European artists. Scarlett Johansson's third movie for Woody Allen, making her now one of his regular leading ladies (and muses), after Louise Lasser (1969-1972), Diane Keaton (1972-1979 and 1993) and Mia Farrow (1982-1992).
