Digimon: The Movie (2000) **

Directed by Mamoru Hosoda. Way better than that Pukémon movie! Instead of a cutesy animé bore, we’ve got here a clever and exciting Japanese animated film that actually has a semblence of a plot and many interesting characters. It also has a great soundtrack, featuring music by Smash Mouth, Barenaked Ladies and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The only complaint: a lousy Angela Anaconda short which opens the program.

Godzilla 2000 (2000) **

Directed by Takao Okawara. With Takehiro Murata, Naomi Nishide and Mayu Suzuki. Godzilla has gained a lot of weight since he was last spotted (and allegedly killed) in New York City. He no longer runs like a rabbit and has miraculously recover his ability to emit atomic breath. Now he’s back and as mean as ever, ready to destroy Tokyo while fighting against a mysterious UFO. The film is badly dubbed (thank God), campy and quite enjoyable. There is a hilariously philosophical closing line - “Godzilla is inside all of us”. Funny, I always thought it was the other way around - not that it would matter to the poor guy sweating it out inside that rubber suit.

Rosie (2000) **

Directed by Patrice Toye. With Aranka Coppens, Sara de Roo, Frank Vercruyssen.
Just like in the case of “The Sixth Sense”, a detailed plot summary would inevitably ruin the neat twist ending of this compelling Belgian drama. Well directed, though quite slow at times, it’s a fine psychological portrait of a disturbed thirteen-year-old girl. The film is harsh, sweet, bitter and always emotionally engrossing.

Directed by Vivian Naefe. With Aglaia Szyszkovitz, Gedeon Burkhard and Heino Ferch. A screwball comedy about a jealous wife who wants her lying and cheating hubby back. So what does she do? Does she kidnap her husband? No. Does she kidnap her husband’s mistress? No. Instead, she just kidnaps the mistress’s husband! And that’s just the beginning of this weird, annoying, crazy German film full of dirty diapers, barf bags, cold pizzas and other disgusting props.

Lea (2000) *

With Lenka Vlasakova, Christian Redl, Hanna Schygulla, Miroslav Donutil and Udo Kier. Directed by Ivan Fila, Lea is sad little film about despair, hope and redemption. Subtlety isn’t the main virtue of this violent and bizarre German drama. The heroine is a mute Slovakian woman traumatized by an abusive childhood. One day, a mysterious German soldier shows up in her remote village and falls in love with her. He actually purchases her from her adoptive parents so that she can come with him and be his bride. But once he has her back in Germany, he abuses her in the same way that her father used to. It’s basically a G-rated S&M movie about domination and submission. Unpleasant, but very tame.

Directed by Houchang Allayari. With Julia Stemberger, Karl Morkovics and Meltem Cumbul. Two newborn babies might have accidently been switched at birth in a hospital. One baby belongs to a racist Austrian couple in love with Jorg Haider; and the other to a family of poor Turkish immigrants who are promptly deported to their homeland. So now, trying to retrieve their baby, the neo-Nazi couple has to travel all the way to Turkey and face the people they’ve hated all their lives. Conventionally directed, but sharply written, this is the ultimate “xenophobes-getting-their-just-desserts” political comedy, strongly condemning the latest anti-immigrant policies of many European governments.

Billy Elliot (2000) **

Directed by Stephen Daldry. With Jamie Bell, Julie Walters and Gary Lewis. Excellent British comedy/drama in the best tradition of Brassed Off and The Full Monty. The film is set in a poor coal-mining town, where striking miners hurl insults at scabs and cops, and where a talented young boy dreams of becoming a great ballet dancer. It sounds corny, perhaps, but unless you’re completely heartless, you’ll love every minute of it.

Promise Her Anything (2000) *

A bizarre romantic comedy, set in a small village whose inhabitants steadfastly refuse to pay their taxes. The plot revolves around a greedy entrepreneur who wants to build a Wal-Mart store and a taxwoman who finds herself being seduced by the town’s hunk (Zane) in a brave attempt to maintain the tax-free regime. The film is weird enough to be quite interesting, but lame dialogue and weak acting all but sink this seriously misguided effort.

The Closer You Get (2000) **

With Niamh Cusack, Sean McGinley, Ian Hart. A delightful piece of Irish blarney, set in a small Celtic village full of horny lads and lasses. The battle of the sexes takes a few unexpected turns as the boys place an ad in a newspaper looking for American women, while the gals retaliate by inviting some hot Spanish sailors. Fine entertainement in the tradition of Local Hero and Waking Ned Devine.

42 Up (2000) **

Wonderland (2000) **

Directed by Michael Winterbottom. With Molly Parker, Shirley Henderson, and Gina McKee. A British family drama about three sisters dealing with life’s many problems (such as unreliable boyfriends, difficult pregnancy and a barking dog). At its best, it’s a charming “working-class-Brits” drama with interesting characters and mature dialogue. But at its worst, it’s something of a proletarian soap opera, full of melodramatic hysterics, verbal battles, and bitter recriminations.

The Highwayman (2000) *

A tough road movie about a gang of thieves and murderers which suddenly morphes into a soapy melodrama about a young girl looking for her daddy. This Canadian film has to be seen to be believed. It defies description. It’s so monstruously bad, it might be a case of deliberate sabotage. "Hey, guys, let’s make the worst movie of all time!".

Full Blast (2000) **

Me Myself I (2000) **

Directed by Pip Karmel. With Rachel Griffith, David Roberts, and Sandy Winton. This excellent Australian comedy/drama offers a neat variation on “Sliding Doors”: a “what if” scenario, where a professionally successful single woman discovers how her life would have turned out had she married the man of her dreams and gave birth to three bratty kids. Griffith (Toni Collette’s wheelchair-bound friend in "Muriel’s Wedding") gives an absolutely terrific performance as a brilliant writer suddenly coping with cooking, laundry, and other unpleasant household chores.

Le Petit Ciel (2000) *

A worthless piece of crap that peeps, creaks and squeaks for 90 minutes, torturing viewers with its despicable attempt to evoke pity for a young man dying of cancer. Few films manage to inflict so much mental anguish and emotional distress as this monstruosity. Directed by Jean-Sébastien Lord. With Garence Clavel, Jocelyn Blanchard, Micheline Lanctot.

La Bouteille (2000) **

Directed by Alain Desrochers. With Pascale Bussière, Jean Lapointe and Liliana Komorowska. Weak ending, but otherwise a memorable and profound film about love, friendship and ambition. It’s the story of two friends who come back to their native town after 15 years in order to dig up a bottle and find out if they have realized their dreams. A nice surprise.

L’Invention de l’amour (2000) *

Directed by Claude Demers. With David La Haye, Pascale Montpetit, Delphine Brodeur. The film is seriously weakened by Montpetit’s rather indifferent portrayal of a married woman who has an affair with a flaky novelist (La Haye) after she almost runs him over with her car.

La Vie après l'amour (2000) **

Directed by Gabriel Pelletier. With Michel Côté, Patrick Huard, Yves Jacques and Sylvie Léonard. A poor, gentle sap (Côté) goes to pieces after his beloved wife (Léonard) mercilessly dumps him after 20 years of marriage without as much as a word of explanation. It’s supposed to be a comedy, and it might even seem quite hilarious to some (unbelievably cruel) women, but there isn’t much to laugh about here: it’s a devastating chronicle of women’s inhumanity to men.

La Moitié gauche du frigo (2000) **

Realistic drama about a young man looking for a job.

Les Fantomes des 3 Madeleines (2000) *

Directed by Guylaine Dionne. With Sylvie Drapeau. France Arbour, Isadora Galway. Very, very tedious psychological drama about three generations of women discovering their identities... or something along those lines. It’s one of those films where black and white cinematography, languid pace, somnambulic dialogue and serene performances all conspire to put the viewers to sleep.

Les Muses orphelines (2000) **

Directed by Robert Favreau. With Marina Orsini, Céline Bonnier and Fanny Mallette. Four siblings, now all grown up, still cannot deal with a tragedy that befell them almost 20 years earlier, when they were all abandoned by their mother. Unlike Lilies, this adaptation of a Michel Marc Bouchard’s play falls short of the mark as far as stylistic innovation and cinematic virtuosity are concerned. But the characters are fascinating, there is an ingenious plot, and the dialogue is sharp. It’s a perfect example of a play so good that even an indifferent adaptation couldn’t completely destroy its potential.

Titan A.E. (2000) **

Directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. With the voices of Matt Damon, Drew Barrymore and Bill Pullman. It would be fair to say that this animated sci-fi adventure pic isn't nowhere as good as the unfairly maligned "Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace" (1999). But since it doesn’t carry the baggage of the insanely inflated expectations that have wounded the George Lucas epic, maybe the audiences will appreciate it for what it really is - a nice, average, little adventure movie about evil aliens trying to exterminate the human race.

American Psycho (2000) **

Autumn In New York (2000) **

Directed by Joan Chen. With Richard Gere, Winona Ryder and Jill Henessy. A great melodrama in the best tradition of Douglas Sirk or Irving Rapper. Unabashedly old-fashioned, the film has everything: a great romance, a dying woman, a long lost child, and a worthless man who finds redemption. Ryder gives a riveting, quirky and totally unexpected performance.

The Beach (2000) **

Leo in Thailand.

Best In Show (2000) **

Directed by Christopher Guest. With Christopher Guest, Parker Posey, Eugene Levy. A fairly amusing mockumentary, poking fun at the American culture in general and dog shows in particular. Unfortunately, since every single character is a certifiable weirdo, the movie lacks a “normal” reference point that would allow all this craziness to stand out in relief. And it doesn’t help that dogs shows are an awfully easy target for satire.

The Big Kahuna (2000) **

Bless The Child (2000) **

Directed by Chuck Russell. With Kim Basinger, Jimmy Smits and Rufus Sewell. Quite a rarity - a deeply religious action/horror movie, which takes itself very seriously. It’s a story of a Christ-like little girl who can heal the sick and resurrect the dead. We actually see God’s angels fighting against the Devil and his cohorts. It might be the only action flick where praying nuns are the decisive factor during the final battle. It’s totally ridiculous, of course, but in a very entertaining way.

Boiler Room (2000) **

Directed by Ben Younger . With Giovanni Ribisi, Ben Affleck and Nia Long. Take a pound of Glengarry Glen Ross. Add two cups of Wall Street. Mix it with a spoonful of The Firm. Stir. While cooking, sprinkle it with an ounce of In The Company Of Men. And if it’s still too sweet, add a dash of Fight Club. The result will be Boiler Room, a fascinating piece of post-modernist cinematic cookery, set in the offices of a Long Island brokerage firm full of hyper-agressive stockjocks getting off on the andrenaline rush, the silver-tongue lingo and the ego boost of finagling hard sales for outrageos commissions.

Le seul problème (assez mineur, d’ailleurs): Boiler Room imite d’un peu trop près certains récents succès du cinéma hollywoodien, tel que Glengarry Glen Ross, Wall Street, The Firm, In The Company of Men et Fight Club.

The Crew (2000) **

Directed by Michael Dinner. With Richard Dreyfuss, Burt Reynolds and Dan Hedaya. There’ve been far too many mob comedies lately, but this one is more amusing than most. It’s about four retired wiseguys enjoying their last years under the Florida sun, pretending to kill people, chasing after “broads” and annoying a lot of people. Fortunately, there are no “let’s rob our last bank for the old-time sake” heists, just plenty of enjoyable - if familiar - comic mayhem.

Drowning Mona (2000) **

Erin Brockovich (2000) **

"A Civil Action" meets "Norma Rae". Only better.

The Family Man (2000) **

Directed by Brett Ratner. With Nicholas Cage, Tea Leoni, Don Cheadle. A male version of Me Myself I. Once again, a professionally successful bachelor discovers the joys of family life in some kind of “what if” alternate universe. Cage and Leoni are quite good, but Hollywood should probably try filming an original script for a change, instead of constantly beating the same tired high-concept ideas to death.

Frequency (2000) **

A father and a son talk to each other on a radio across 30 years.

Girl Interrupted (2000) **

Winona Ryder plays a patient in a mental institution.

Gladiator (2000) **

Historically inaccurate, but often exciting film about a gladiator who plots against the Roman Emperor. An undeserved winner of an Oscar for Best Picture.

Gone In 60 Seconds (2000) **

Directed by Dominic Sena. With Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie and Giovanni Ribisi. Another one of Jerry Bruckheimer’s “Wham, bam, thank you, film editor” high-octane action flicks, where the takes are short, the montage is frantic, the gestures are cool, and the story makes absolutely no sense. It’s about a bunch of car thieves (led by Cage and Jolie) who MUST steal 50 cars in 40-something hours, or Cage’s kid brother (Ribisi) will get shot. But two sneaky cops are on their tail and the chase is on.

Gossip (2000) **

Directed by Davis Guggenheim. With James Mardsen, Lena Headey and Eric Bogosian. Just like real gossip, this film is a guilty pleasure of sorts - perverse, but very entertaining. It’s all about three college students spreading a rumor about one of their friends. Seemingly innocent at first, the gossip gradually takes on a life of its own, leading to arrests and murders. The film’s only drawback is the conclusion - ridiculously contrived and very unimaginative.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) **

Directed by Ron Howard. With Jim Carrey, Christine Baranski, Molly Shannon. Welcome to Whoville, a wretched, totalitarian little town where everybody looks, talks and thinks alike, and where everybody has to love Christmas, or else... Only one man is brave enough to challenge this souless conformity - the Grinch, a brave individualist staunchly defending personal freedom, who refuses to toe the line and maintains a healthy dose of skepticism towards that horribly commercialized holiday. He might be a tad cynical (his daily schedule include such tasks as “wallow in self-pity” and “solve world hunger - tell no one”), but he’s the only reason to watch this otherwise mediocre adaptation of the famous Dr Seuss’s story. Unfortunately, even the Grinch ultimately surrenders his values and joins the collectivist society - giving this political allegory a very tragic ending.

The Patriot (2000) **

Directed by Roland Emmerich. With Mel Gibson, Tom Wilkinson and Chris Cooper. Gibson is back at his favorite pastime - slaughtering Brits - only this time he’s wearing pants and has a cool Cherokee tomahawk. He plays a reluctant American revolutionary, who at first isn’t too thrilled to trade one tyrant in London for thousands of tyrants at home - but after the Anglos kill his son, it’s “hasta la vista, King Georgie”. Nice battle scenes and lots of close-ups of teary-eyed little girls hugging their daddies.

Pitch Black (2000) **

Remember that sexy blonde who slept with Ally Sheedy in High Art? Well, she’s back in a Sigourney Weaver role as a tough-as-nails spaceship commander stranded on a hostile planet full of ferocious aliens. Not particularly scary, but campy in a healthy sort of way, this sci-fi/horror film is quite interesting for its cinematography.

Romeo Must Die (2000) **

Film d’action d’Andrzej Bartkowiak.

Rugrats In Paris: The Movie (2000) **

Directed by Stig Bergqvist and Paul Demeyer. With the voices of E.G.Daily, Tara Charendoff and Cheryl Chase. The Rugrats monsters are heading for France and the City of Lights will never be the same. Any kidpic that simutaneously spoofs The Godfather (complete with a hobby-horse head in the bed), Lady And The Tramp, King Kong and the paintings by Katsushika Hokusai, can’t be all bad. Especially when it’s loaded with good gags, and characters named Coco La Bouche, Lil DeVille and Stu Pickles.

Saving Grace (2000) **

Directed by Nigel Cole. With Brenda Blethyn, Craig Ferguson, Tcheky Karyo. Who knew that growing pot could be so much fun? Blethyn plays a sweet old lady in a small English town who decides to pay off her late husband’s huge debts by becoming a hemp farmer. All her neighbors (including the cops!) quickly learn about her new hobby, but since this is a British comedy, everybody is way too excentric to worry about the law and such. Hilarious and sweet.

Sugar Town (2000) **

Tequila Body Shots (2000) **

Directed by Tony Shyu. With Joey Lawrence, Dru Mouser and Nathan Anderson. Horny American teenagers are celebrating Halloween in a small Mexican hamlet, when suddenly... a ghost of a jealous Mexican officer emerges from Hell and kidnaps one of the girls. This entertaining, but terminally weird updating of the Orpheus and Eurydice legend seems oddly inspired by From Dusk Till Dawn - another Chicano-flavored mind-twisting hybrid of several incompatible genres.
