Spirits Of The Dead (1968) ***

Very uneven omnibus feature consisting of three shorts adapted from Edgar Allan Poe's stories. Roger Vadim's episode starring Jane Fonda is extremely disappointing. But Louis Malle's segment starring Alain Delon and Brigitte Bardot is excellent (and very sexy). And Fellini's segment is a cinematic tour de force, one of the highlights of his career. Segments:

"Metzengerstein" (Roger Vadim)  *
"William Wilson" (Louis Malle)  ***
"Toby Dammit" (Federico Fellini)  ****

Sympathy For The Devil (1968) ***

I Am Curious – Blue (1968) ***

Silence And Cry (1968) ***

Romeo And Juliet (1968) ***

Firemen's Ball (1968) ***

Milos Forman's comedy about a beauty contest organized by a firemen's union in Communist Czechoslovakia. A vicious satire about Communism.

Lalka (1968) **

An adaptation of Boleslaw Prus' novel about an impoverished aristocratic woman (Beata Tyszkiewicz) playing with the affections of a rich merchant. Also with Anna Seniuk as a prostitute.

Weekend z dziewczyna (1968) **

Polish drama about a young woman looking for her biological parents.

Claude Chabrol's film about a menage à trois involving a man and two bisexual women.

Un Film comme les autres (1968) *

The first of Godard's agit-prop films made between 1968 and 1972. It would probably worked better as a radio program, because its banal visuals actually distract from its uneven, but occassionally interesting soundtrack.

Je t'aime je t'aime (1968) *

Probably Alain Resnais' worst film, though "La Vie est un roman" (1983) and "L'Amour a mort" (1984) are also strong contenders for that dubious distinction. The film was selected at the 1968 Cannes Film Festival, but the director was so ashamed of it, he withdrew it from competition. Of course, he later pretended that he only did it to support the May 68 student revolt in Paris, but the real reason was undoubtedly the film's narrative and stylistic weaknesses.

Rachel Rachel (1968) *

Depressing film about a not-so-old spinster.

Bullitt (1968) ***

Excellent police drama starring Steve McQueen.

The Conqueror Worm (1968) ***

Superb horror movie about the burning of witches in England.

Death By Hanging (1968) ***

Powerful drama about a hanging.

The Devil Rides Out (1968) ***

Christopher Lee plays an English gentleman fighting against a sect of Devil worshippers. Arguably, Hammer Studio's best horror film, very suspenseful.

Faces (1968) ***

One of John Cassavetes' best films.

Finian's Rainbow (1968) ***

Fred Astaire's last musical film. The songs are excellent, but the dance numbers are a bit disappointing. Musical numbers:

"How Are Things In Glocca Morra?"  ***
"Look To The Rainbow" (reprise)  ***

Five Million Years To Earth (1968) ***

Aka "Quatermass And The Pit". An excellent science-fiction movie from Britain.

Funny Girl (1968) ***

The life of Fanny Brice.

Przekladaniec (1968) ****

A hilarious science-fiction satire scripted by Stanislaw Lem. In a near future, transplantation of organs is reaching such epidemic proportions, that legal definitions of individual identities become hotly disputed.

High School (1968) ***

Fascinating documentary that reveals the moral and intellectual emptiness of the middle-class bourgeois values.

Roy Andersson's debut, a short film about a young couple waking up and reluctantly getting out of bed.

Cybele (1968) ***

Glupia sprawa - kabaret (1968) *****

Pierwszy kabaret Olgi Lipinskiej. Wspaniala obsada - Bohdan Lazuka, Barbara Wrzesinska, Wojciech Pokora, Barbara Krafftowna, Kazimierz Grzeskowiak, Adriana Godlewska, Krystyna Sienkiewicz, Jan Kobuszewski, Tadeusz Plucinski i Roman Klosowski - oraz znakomite piosenki:
