Le Bal (1983) ***
An Algerian film about France, directed by an Italian. The concept is brilliant: 50 years of French history told through dancing in the same ballroom. With the dancers (always played by the same actors) changing characters, the film travels through time, from 1930 until 1980.
The King Of Comedy (1983) ***
Two loosers (Robert de Niro and Sandra Bernhard) kidnap a successful TV host (Jerry Lewis). Strange black comedy directed by Martin Scorsese.
A Christmas Story (1983) ***
Wonderfully witty and cynical film about a little boy who wants a BB gun for Christmas. Undoubtedly NRA's all-time-favorite film.

Zu Warriors From The Magic Mountain (1983) **
One of many "sword & sorcery" Hong Kong epics, those with flying witches, magicians, monsters, spirits and hopping vampires. Made by Tsui Hark in 1983 and considered a classic, it's nevertheless a rather campy and laughable film. At best, it can be seen as an appetizing hint for the glories to come. "Wu xia pian" isn't Tsui Hark's forte (see Green Snake); Ching Siu-Tung can handle it much better (A Chinese Ghost Story, Swordsman II).

A brave knight saves a beautiful princess from a fearsome dragon. Driessen's unique style of animation greatly enchances this remarkable film.
Conflict (1983) ***
A border conflict between two different sets of matches ignites into a full scale war, whose flames spread everywhere. Excellent film about the dangers of ethnic hatred. It bears some similarities to Canadian film "Neighbours" (1953).
Bottom's Dream (1983) **
A donkey has a vaguely erotic dream. Nice cartoon inspired by Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". John Canemaker won an ASIFA East Award as best director.
Narcissus (1983) **
Ballet dancers. Directed by Norman McLaren. Winner of the Second Prize (short film) at the Montreal Film Festival.
Early Bird (1983) **
This short cartoon about a radio DJ is part of Aardman's "Conversation Pieces" series. It won a Special Jury Award at the L.A Animation Celebration. Co-directed by Peter Lord and David Sproxton.
Sundae In New York (1983) *
A slightly annoying hommage to the Big Apple, with animated clay figures singing the praises of their beloved city. An Academy Award winner.
Mr Gloom (1983) *
Brief, rather incoherent cartoon, whose main protagonist is attacked by demons, ghosts and pencils.
Happy Hour (1983) *
Two bar patrons fight over a radio. They finally settle for a piece of classical music.
