Digimon: The Movie (2000) **

Directed by Mamoru Hosoda. Way better than that Pukémon movie! Instead of a cutesy animé bore, we’ve got here a clever and exciting Japanese animated film that actually has a semblence of a plot and many interesting characters. It also has a great soundtrack, featuring music by Smash Mouth, Barenaked Ladies and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The only complaint: a lousy Angela Anaconda short which opens the program.

Godzilla 2000 (2000) **

Directed by Takao Okawara. With Takehiro Murata, Naomi Nishide and Mayu Suzuki. Godzilla has gained a lot of weight since he was last spotted (and allegedly killed) in New York City. He no longer runs like a rabbit and has miraculously recover his ability to emit atomic breath. Now he’s back and as mean as ever, ready to destroy Tokyo while fighting against a mysterious UFO. The film is badly dubbed (thank God), campy and quite enjoyable. There is a hilariously philosophical closing line - “Godzilla is inside all of us”. Funny, I always thought it was the other way around - not that it would matter to the poor guy sweating it out inside that rubber suit.

Rosie (2000) **

Directed by Patrice Toye. With Aranka Coppens, Sara de Roo, Frank Vercruyssen.
Just like in the case of “The Sixth Sense”, a detailed plot summary would inevitably ruin the neat twist ending of this compelling Belgian drama. Well directed, though quite slow at times, it’s a fine psychological portrait of a disturbed thirteen-year-old girl. The film is harsh, sweet, bitter and always emotionally engrossing.

Comme c’était également le cas avec “The Sixth Sense”, une description détaillé de ce drame belge ruinerait inévitablement sa conclusion surprenante. Très bien fait, même si parfois un peu trop lent, il s’agit d’un fascinant portrait psychologique d'une jeune fille de 13 ans. “Rosie” est un film à la fois dur et doux, amer et sensible, qui dégage beaucoup d’émotion. C’est un premier long métrage très prometteur de Patrice Toye, une jeune cinéaste flamande. Le film beneficie surtout d’une performance remarquable d’Aranka Coppens dans la rôle principale - jamais la folie adolescante n’a été presentée d’une manière aussi juste et nuancée.

2 Hommes, 2 Femmes, 4 Problèmes (2000) *

Directed by Vivian Naefe. With Aglaia Szyszkovitz, Gedeon Burkhard and Heino Ferch. A screwball comedy about a jealous wife who wants her lying and cheating hubby back. So what does she do? Does she kidnap her husband? No. Does she kidnap her husband’s mistress? No. Instead, she just kidnaps the mistress’s husband! And that’s just the beginning of this weird, annoying, crazy German film full of dirty diapers, barf bags, cold pizzas and other disgusting props.

Lea (2000) *

With Lenka Vlasakova, Christian Redl, Hanna Schygulla, Miroslav Donutil and Udo Kier. Directed by Ivan Fila, Lea is sad little film about despair, hope and redemption. Subtlety isn’t the main virtue of this violent and bizarre German drama. The heroine is a mute Slovakian woman traumatized by an abusive childhood. One day, a mysterious German soldier shows up in her remote village and falls in love with her. He actually purchases her from her adoptive parents so that she can come with him and be his bride. But once he has her back in Germany, he abuses her in the same way that her father used to. It’s basically a G-rated S&M movie about domination and submission. Unpleasant, but very tame.

Léa (Lenka Vlasakova) est une jeune paysanne slovaque abusée par un père cruel. Temoin de la mort de sa mère (tuée sauvagement sous ses yeux), elle perd la parole. Peu à peu, elle retrouve la tranquilité et la paix, mais voilà qu’un jour un ex-militaire allemand arrive dans son village. Il tombe amoureux de Léa (qui ressemble étrangement à sa femme décédée) et.... l’achète afin de la traîner de force dans sa maison en Allemagne et de l’épouser. Poète, peintre et douée pour le violon, Léa vit misérablement auprès de son époux qui l’aime tout en l’abusant très cruellement. Jusqu’à ce qu’il lise un de ses poèmes.

Directed by Houchang Allayari. With Julia Stemberger, Karl Morkovics and Meltem Cumbul. Two newborn babies might have accidently been switched at birth in a hospital. One baby belongs to a racist Austrian couple in love with Jorg Haider; and the other to a family of poor Turkish immigrants who are promptly deported to their homeland. So now, trying to retrieve their baby, the neo-Nazi couple has to travel all the way to Turkey and face the people they’ve hated all their lives. Conventionally directed, but sharply written, this is the ultimate “xenophobes-getting-their-just-desserts” political comedy, strongly condemning the latest anti-immigrant policies of many European governments.
