Maleficent (2014) **
A radical re-writing of the "Sleeping Beauty" tale, with the evil witch as the heroine of the story, Sleeping Beauty's father as the villain, the three fairies as incompetent fools and an impotent Prince unable to wake Sleeping Beauty with his kiss. Not as radical as an adaptation of Anne Rice's "Beauty Trilogy" would have been, but at least half-way there.
The Imitation Game (2014) **
The story of Alan Turing and the breaking of the Enigma code during World War II. Excellent script, pedestrian direction.
Selma (2014) **
The film finally hits its stride in the third act, but until then it's an ultra-conventional, very classical drama about the Civil Rights Movement's greatest shining hour in Selma Alabama in 1965.
The Judge (2014) **
Robert Downey Jr plays a lawyer who must defend his own father (Robert Duvall), a judge, in a murder trial.
Interstellar (2014) **
Pretentious, very ambitious science-fiction epic that tries hard to out-2001 "2001", but fails honorably. Christopher Nolan's weakest film.
Divergent (2014) **
An allegory about a dystopian future where humanity is divided into various clans according to their personality.
