Liberté et patrie (2002) ****
An almost ecstatic recounting by Jean-Luc Godard of the making of a painting by the apocryphal artist Aimé Pache. The deeply moving lyricism of this short may astonish even those spectators who arrive to it casually, without any prior knowledge of the filmmakers’s oeuvre.
Undercover (2002) **
A spectator in a movie theater goes crazy when, on screen, he sees his girlfriend naked in bed with another man. A rather unique mix of cinema and performing arts.
An Erotic Tale (2002) **
Niko pens his Berlin tales on the counter of a funky bar behind the shark tank. What better place for a writer to pick up a girl? Along comes Sonja, who wants to know how the horny tale he’s now working on will end. So she invites Niko to finish his erotic tale over a drink at her apartment. There’s only one catch: Martin, her ex-husband, still hasn’t moved out of the place. Directed by Dito Tsintsadze.
Elbow Room: Distances (2002) **
Workplace conflicts are the theme of this unimpressive Canadian cartoon directed by Diane Obomsawin.
Das Rad (2002) *
A German animated film that uses a mixture of stop motion, puppetry, and CGI animation. The film shows the history of a mountain from the distant past through the present and into the future, sometimes moving through time at high speed. Nominated for an Oscar.
