Keeping The Faith (2000) *

Routine romantic comedy about a priest (Edward Norton), a rabbi (Ben Stiller) and a businesswoman (Jenna Elfman).

Lucky Numbers (2000) *

Set in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, it’s an ordinary comedy about a weatherman who tries to pay off his huge debts by cheating on state lotery. Kudrow is excellent (as always), but Roth is miscast, Travolta’s haircut is horrible and there is an aura of complete pointlessness hanging over the entire movie. Directed by Nora Ephron. With John Travolta, Lisa Kudrow and Tim Roth.

Battlefield Earth (2000) *

Directed by Roger Christian. With John Travolta, Barry Pepper and Forest Whitaker. Ever wondered what would have happened had the aliens won in Independence Day? Then look no further than this preposterous sci-fi saga based on a novel by Scientology founder L.Ron Hubbard. It’s the year 3000, the human race is enslaved, and the entire universe is ruled by a disgusting species of fashion victims who apparently NEVER wash their hair. They make Klingons look like sharp-dressed dandies.

Me Myself and Irene (2000) *

Don’t expect another There’s Something About Mary (or even Dumb and Dumber). Instead, brace yourself for a mere Kingpin-caliber hilarity as Carrey plays a schizophrenic cop who falls for a feisty damsel-in-distress (Zellweger) trying to evade every law enforcement agent between Rhode Island and New York State. As usual, the jokes are of rather questionable taste, but some of them manage to elicite a mild chuckle. Directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly. With Jim Carrey, Renee Zellweger and Robert Forster.

MVP (2000) *

A chimp can play hockey. He can also help a hearing-impaired girl (Smith) gain some confidence in life. As for the viewer, he can only walk out of the cinema, cursing and swearing. Directed by Robert Vince. With Kevin Zegers, Olivier Muirhead and Jamie Renée Smith.

The Next Best Thing (2000) *

Lame and unpleasant comedy/romance/courtroom drama about an ugly custody battle between a gay gardner (Everett) and a mother of his child (Madonna). This movie is like an evil twin of The Object Of My Affection; instead of celebrating the new concept of non-traditional extended family where gays and straights can co-exist in harmony and where sexual attraction is only one of many bonds that unite people, The Next Best Thing offers a cautionary tale of what can happen when a gay man gets too close to his fag hag.

102 Dalmatians (2000) *

Poor Cruella, all she wanted was a lousy fur coat. Was that a sufficient reason to put her in an insane asylum and subject her to Professor Pavlov’s aversion-therapy experiments? Will Cruella recover her sanity? Will she kidnap those wretched dalmatian puppies again? And does anybody really care what happens in this tedious sequel to a pointless remake of a great Disney classic? Directed by Kevin Lima. With Glenn Close, Ioan Gruffudd and Alice Evans.

Play It To The Bone (2000) *

A story of two small-time boxers (and good friends), who agree to fight each other as the opening card of the latest Mike Tyson bout in Vegas. They drive to Nevada, argue bitterly on the way, fight a good fight, and finally reconcile on their way back. It's very disturbing how the film first establishes the humanity of its protagonists, and then transforms them into savage beasts, who mercilessly beat each other's brains out in the boxing rink. Directed by Ron Shelton. With Woody Harrelson, Antonio Banderas, Lolita Davidovich and Lucy Liu.

Ready to Rumble (2000) *

Two slackers (Arquette and Caan) are crushed when their wrestling idol (Platt) is defeated, humiliated and fired from the WWF. Advertized as a sport pic, it’s above all a "fart-and-puke" comedy - gross, coarse... and sometimes quite amusing. Just don’t take your parents to see it. Directed by Brian Robbins. With Oliver Platt, David Arquette, Scott Caan, Rose McGowan and Martin Landau.

Rules of Engagement (2000) *

A Marine Corps colonel (Jackson) faces a court-martial after ordering a massacre of 83 Arab civilians in Yemen. It’s a skillfully executed little drama about law, politics, and military ethics. But as a political statement, it’s nothing short of inflammatory, showing little Arab kids firing automatic weapons and killing poor US Marines as they are bravely defending their embassy from an angry (and well armed) mob. What we’ve got here is Yankee jingoism at its worst. Directed by William Friedkin. With Samuel L. Jackson, Tommy Lee Jones, Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce.

The Road To Eldorado (2000) *

It’s hard to believe that Jeffrey Katzenberg, the guy behind the best Disney pics of the early 90’s, could have produced such a sub-standard, instantly forgettable animated feature. The story of two Spanish adventurers trying to find gold in America is fine, dialogues are amusing and there are some nice gags - but the poor quality of animation, the sluggish pacing, and the barely-serviceable musical numbers wreck the whole enterprise. Directed by Eric Bergeron and Don Paul. With the voices of Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh and Rosie Perez.

Scream 3 (2000) *

The weakest of all three horror films.

Passion of Mind (2000) *

Forgettable film starring Demi Moore as a woman leading two different lives.

Red Planet (2000) *

Directed by Anthony Hoffman. With Carrie-Ann Moss, Val Kilmer and Tom Sizemore. No, it’s not a propaganda film about the Soviet Union winning the Cold War, but a lame science-fiction endeavor about a space mission to Mars. The year is 2057. The Earth is facing an ecological disaster, and everyone is desperately looking for another planet to pollute and destroy. A team of eager space hunks (led by The Matrix’s Moss) is ready to face insurmontable obstacles (solar radiation, sand storms, Martian bugs, etc.) to accomplish the assignment, save the human race and deliver another worthless Hollywood blockbuster.

Screwed (2000) *

Directed by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. With Norm Macdonald, David Chappelle and Danny DeVito. A frustrated butler (McDonald) kidnaps the beloved puppy dog of his evil employer. But the dog manages to escape and the employer thinks that it’s the butler who has been kidnapped... but she still refuses to pay the ransom! Made by the same folks who wrote The People Vs Larry Flynt and The Man One The Moon, it’s a nutty sort of comedy, totally devoid of any subtlety, but still quite entertaining.

The Sculls (2000) *

Directed by Rob Cohen. With Joshua Jackson, Paul Walker and Hill Harper. Quite enjoyable, but hopelessly silly chase thriller about a secret Ivy League society and one brave lad determined to expose its evil ways. The pacing is frantic, but there isn't even a pretense of a coherent plot - the film simply flies by the seat of its pants, hoping nobody will notice just how vacuous (and ridiculous) it is.

Shaft (2000) *

Inferior remake of the 1971 classic.

Shanghai Noon (2000) *

Hong Kong’s most popular kung-fu superstar, Jackie Chan, plays Chong Wang (pronounced John Wayne), a clumsy Imperial Guard to the Emperor of China who tries to rescue a beautiful Chinese princess kidnapped by a evil outlaw in Nevada circa 1880. Sad to say, Jackie Chan is getting old. His almost-legendary balletic agility is gone. His stunts are unimpressive. We’re seeing a once-great athlete slowly withering away.

Snow Day (2000) *

Directed by Chris Koch. With Chevy Chase, Chris Elliott and Pam Grier. Snowballs fly fast and furious, sleds skid down the mountain slopes, and a sadistic Snow Plow Man (Chris Elliott shamelessly imitating Daniel Stern from Home Alone) engages in an orgy of child abuse. A weird comedy which serves a hefty dose of sugar-coated family-values sentimentality... and a sight of Chevy Chase dressed as a hula dancer.

Supernova (2000) *

Directed by Thomas Lee. With James Spader, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster. A spaceship investigating an SOS. Crew members slaughtered one by one by a mysterious visitor. Sound familiar? EW had a perfect joke about this turkey: "in space, nobody can hear you rip off other movies". So far, this is the Worst Film Of The Third Millenium: derivative, unbelievably pretentious, badly paced and totally devoid of any reedeming qualities.

Thomas And The Magic Railroad (2000) *

Directed by Britt Allcroft. With Alec Baldwin, Mara Wilson and Peter Fonda. Naughty tots at home? Well, making them watch this asinine kidpic about talking trains would certainly be the most cruel form of punishment they could ever face. Part model animation, part live feature, this is arguably the worst children’s movie since "Barney’s Great Adventure".

The Watcher (2000) *

Directed by Joe Charbanic. With Keanu Reeves, James Spader and Marisa Tomei. A solid, if unspectacular thriller about a ruthless serial killer (Reeves) playing sadistic head games with a guilt-ridden cop (Spader). Before each new killing, the murderer sends a picture of his victim. The police has 24 hours to find her. This nice gimmick certainly makes the story very suspenseful, but it’s hardly a surprising and original film. And there are way too many helicopter shots. On a scale of one to Seven, this one gets a pass.

The Tigger Movie (2000) *

Directed by Jun Falkenstein. With Winnie The Pooh and Tigger, too. The wimpy bear, the passive-agressive donkey, the smart-ass piglet and the hyperactive bouncing tiger are back. Unfortunately, they’re back in the laziest, slowest and least imaginative animated feature ever released by the Disney studio - it makes Robin Hood look like a masterpiece. Call it a cinematic equivalent of a sleeping pill: Never have I seen so many snoring tots.

Whatever It Takes (2000) *

Directed by David Hubbard. With Shane West, Christine Lakin, and Marla Sokoloff. Now, let’s see: "10 Things I Hate About You" was a teen version of Shakespeare’s "Taming Of The Shrew", "She’s All That" offered a "teeny" adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s "Pygmalion" and a few years back, "Clueless" bravely updated Jane Austen’s "Emma". Now, it’s "Cyrano de Bergerac"’s turn to serve as inspiration for a yet another "horny-teens-trying-to-find-a-prom-date-and-get-laid" adolescent epic. Marla Sokoloff ("The Practice") is playing a high-school Roxanne.

Charlie's Angels (2000) *

Disappointing big screen adaptation of the cult TV series.

Pay It Forward (2000) *

Strange drama about altruism.

The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000) *

Not nearly as good as the classic cartoon series.

Bedazzled (2000) *

Directed by Harold Ramis. With Brendan Fraser, Elizabeth Hurley and Frances O’Connor. A remake of Dudley Moore’s 1967 comedy about a poor sap who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for seven wishes (unfortunately, "go to hell" isn’t one of them). It’s hard to believe the director of Groundhog Day could have made such a lame and unexciting film. Even Hurley and O’Connor (Kiss Or Kill) can’t save it from the hellfires of eternal damnation. The only bright spot is Fraser, especially when playing an obese Columbian drug lord who loves to hear himself talk in Spanish.

Big Momma’s House (2000) *

Directed by Raja Gasnell. With Martin Lawrence, Nia Long, Paul Giammatti. An FBI agent (Lawrence) disguises himself as a fat grannie to catch an escaped convict (and seduce his girlfriend). A mildly amusing, hopelessly predictable and often very gross comedy in the tradition of Mrs Doubtfire.

Boys and Girls (2000) *

Directed by Robert Iscove. With Freddie Prinze Jr, Claire Forlani, Jason Biggs and Allyson Hannigan. Another teen comedy directed by Robert Iscove (She’s All That). It’s basially a remake of When Harry Met Sally - something about two best friends who wind up in bed together. But aside from an attractive cast (Forlani looking incredibly sexy every time she crosses her eyes) and nice Bay Area locations (try to count the shots with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background), there is very little to recommend this movie.

Down To You (2000) *

Directed by Kris Isacsson. With Julia Stiles, Freddie Prinze Jr, Selma Blair. Too busy staring at Stiles` sexy lips, sinuous cheeks and intriguing eyes, I actually haven`t noticed anything even remotely resembling a plot (unless "boy-meets-girl, boy-looses-girl, boy-finds-girl" counts as a narrative). In fact, this latest teens-in-heat flick is saddled with lousy dialogue, boring characters and predictable gags. It`s a perfect last date (or first-and-only-date) movie.

Final Destination (2000) *

Sawa plays a psychic guy who predicts a plane crash, thereby saving several of his friends from a horrible death. But apparently, “The Death” cannot be cheated quite so easily, and so his friends still die one by one in a series of bizarre accidents. Marginally better than Idle Hands, but still a totally forgettable teen-horror flick which repeats the same old tricks over and over again.

Get Carter (2000) *

Directed by Stephen T. Kay. With Sylvester Stallone, Miranda Richardson and Rachel Leigh Cook. A inferior remake of the 1971 classic. Routine crime flick about a very tough guy (Stallone) trying to avenge his brother’s death. The plot of this humoreless little film would be hopelessly dated even in the 1930’s. And the approach - sombre and deadly serious - seems totally inappropriate for such a material.

Grizzly Falls (2000) *

Hanging Up (2000) *

Directed by Diane Keaton. With Meg Ryan, Lisa Kudrow, Diane Keaton and Walther Matthau. Story of three sisters (Ryan, Keaton and Kudrow) dealing with the imminent death of their father (Matthau, and as grumpy as ever). On the one hand, the sentimental story sucks, the dialogue is lame, Keaton is shrill, and Kudrow is downright exasperating. But on the other hand, there is Meg Ryan, with her perky nose, flawless comic timing (too bad there are no jokes to time) and winning personality. If there have ever been a case when a good actress had saved a hopelessly mediocre film, it was probably this one.

Highlander: Endgame (2000) *

Directed by Douglas Aarniokoski. With Christopher Lambert, Adrien Paul, and Bruce Payne. How bad is it? As bad as it gets. No plot, no humor, no characterization. Just mindless, pointless, and boring, violence. The film goes back and forth between the present and the past for no apparent reason, looking like a series of outtakes from many different movies. It might be noted that “Highlander: Endgame” is not a sequel to the earlier theatrical films. Rather, it follows the story of the TV show. But does anybody care? *

I Dreamed of Africa (2000) *

Isn't She Great? (2000) *

Directed by Andrew Bergman. With Bette Midler, Nathan Lane and Stockard Channing.
The answer is no. And besides, Jacqueline Susann's life-long struggle to become rich and famous was probably way more trashy and entertaining than this gentle, modest and TEDIOUS biopic would have us believe. Or maybe the approach is just wrong. Maybe a film shouldn't focus on the author of Valley of the Dolls actually WRITTING her book, as well as trying to publish, edit and promote it.

The Kid (2000) *

Directed by Jon Turteltaub. With Bruce Willis, Spencer Breslin and Emily Mortimer. Willis plays a successful 40-year-old consultant who quite literally gets in touch with his inner child (Breslin). The film is mawkish and quite annoying, but the chubby little kid is quite delightful - he has a knack for imitating Willis’ trademark gestures. The movie was probably inspired by those insurance commercials (like "Freedom 55"), where people get to meet themselves when they’re happily retired.

Lost Souls (2000) *

Directed by Janusz Kaminski. With Winona Ryder, Ben Chaplin and Philip Baker Hall. A ridiculous “devil-is-among-us” supernatural thriller that makes us appreciate "The End of Days" for coherence, and "Bless The Child" for artistic quality. Ryder (looking like a nun with too much makeup) plays a former exorcism patient who tries to prevent Satan from taking another human form. It’s all very tedious and devoid of any tension. Hopefully, Spielberg’s favorite cinematographer hasn’t quit his day job yet.

Men Of Honor (2000) *

Directed by George Tillman Jr. With Cuba Gooding Jr, Robert de Niro and Charlize Theron. The true story of Carl Brashear, an African-American navy diver who has overcome incredible obstacles (such as racism and a loss of a leg) to become a Master Chief, Navy’s highest rank for an enlisted man. Very conventional and unsurprising, the film follows the familiar routine of countless “soldier’s training” movies, where the recruit is abused and humiliated by his superior in the first hour, only to gain his respect and admiration in the second. Simply put, Men of Honor is to racism what G.I.Jane was to sexism - Hollywood’s oversimplified way of dealing with a hot-button issue.

Mission Impossible 2 (2000) *
