The World Before Her (2012) **
A documentary comparing beauty pageants in India with the rise of Hindu nationalism.
The Secret World of Arrietty (2012) **
An animated adaptation of Mary Norton's “The Borrowers” (already adapted in the 1998 live-action film starring John Goodman). Hayao Miyazaki wrote the script, but unfortunately didn't direct it, which probably explains why it's nowhere near as enchanting as other Ghibli Studio's classics.
A Royal Affair (2012) **
Alicia Vikander shines in her breakthrough role, but the movie is quite disappointing, despite its Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film.
Tres Marias (2012) **
Tarantinesque crime drama from Costa Rica. Superbly directed, with gorgeous black and white cinematography, but betrayed by a very weak ending.
Reality (2012) *
Sad Italian film about a delusional fish salesman dreaming of becoming a reality TV star.
No (2012) **
Chilean drama about the 1988 referendum that led to the end of Pinochet's dictatorship.
