Directed by Ben Younger . With Giovanni Ribisi, Ben Affleck and Nia Long. Take a pound of Glengarry Glen Ross. Add two cups of Wall Street. Mix it with a spoonful of The Firm. Stir. While cooking, sprinkle it with an ounce of In The Company Of Men. And if it’s still too sweet, add a dash of Fight Club. The result will be Boiler Room, a fascinating piece of post-modernist cinematic cookery, set in the offices of a Long Island brokerage firm full of hyper-agressive stockjocks getting off on the andrenaline rush, the silver-tongue lingo and the ego boost of finagling hard sales for outrageos commissions.
Tout d’abord, il faut remarquer que cette première réalisation de Ben Younger est une oeuvre réussie, engageante et très amusante. Le seul problème (assez mineur, d’ailleurs): Boiler Room imite d’un peu trop près certains récents succès du cinéma hollywoodien, tel que Glengarry Glen Ross, Wall Street, The Firm, In The Company of Men et Fight Club. Encore un fois, on nous présente des vendeurs qui ferait tout pour tricher leurs clients, des jeunes Turks assoifés d’argent, et des agents du FBI qui font des enquêtes sur les pratique illégaux d’une companie douteuse. On voit aussi beaucoup de discrimination à l’égard des femmes, des bagarres violentes entre les hommes frustrés - bref, on assiste à une véritable récapitulation des thèmes préférés du cinéma actuelle. On dirait presqu’une célébration du machisme yankee...
