Top Musical of 1975

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (Jim Sharman, 20th-Fox)

Giliap (1975) *****

Roy Andersson's masterpiece and that's saying something. Yet when first released in 1975, this film was a complete flop with both the public and the critics. It was 25 years ahead of its time and it was only in 2000 that Andersson would make his next feature film.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) *****

Jaws (1975) *****

Nashville (1975) *****

Barry Lyndon (1975) *****

Love And Death (1975) *****

Tolstoy's "War And Peace" is hilariously parodied in this excellent comedy from Woody Allen.

Salo Or The 120 Days Of Sodom (1975) *****

Pier Paolo Pasolini's masterpiece. Adapted from Marquis de Sade's infamous novel, it's one of the most disturbing works in the entire history of cinema, as well as one of the rare X-rated movies that is nonetheless widely respected in cinephile circles, often shown in university film courses, and written about in prestigious movie magazines. And yet, as far as objectionable content is concerned, ''Salo'' makes even the most explicit pornflick look very tame by comparison. Every imaginable taboo is broken - young people (forced to be fully nude most of the time) are systematically degraded, tortured, mutilated, and even forced to eat feces. But the film is more than just a chronicle of atrocities. There are moment of incredible tenderness as well. A very powerful moment occurs when the young people are forced to walk naked on all fours, and be fed like dogs. One of the villains puts a bunch of nails inside a piece of meat, a girl eagerly eats it and suddenly her mouth is full of blood.

Une Vraie jeune fille (1975) ****

Charlotte Alexandra, who plays the title role in Catherine Breillat's 1975 directorial debut, "Une vraie jeune fille", gives a magnificent performance as a perverse teenager who spends her summer vacations with her parents in South-West France (the Landes region, to be precise). It is what might be called a "physiological picture" as most of it concerns Charlotte's various orifices (her vagina, her ass, her mouth, and even her nose), various liquids that are secreted by those body parts, as well as various objects that might be inserted into them. If you ever wondered what naughty teenage girls are doing when they are bored and alone, here's the chance to find out. Totally uninhibited, the brave actress displays her body without a hint of "pudeur". And what makes it even more brave, her body is far from perfect - her ass is slighly fat, her breasts sag a little and her bush is just a little too thick. But then again, she wouldn't be a "real young girl" otherwise.

F For Fake (1975) ****

Orson Welles' last film is also one of his best - an innovative and clever pseudo-documentary about fraud artists.

Picnic At Hanging Rock (1975) ****

Excellent film about young girls who disappear while on a picnic in the Australian wilderness.

Mirror (1975) ****

A non-narrative film by Andrei Tarkovsky. Beautiful, memorable images.
