This Jackie Chan film has a few nifty car chases, but too few fight scenes. The sequel to this film, 1991's "Armour Of God II: Operation Condor" (released in America in 1997 as "Operation Condor") is much better.

An Autumn's Tale (1987) **

A romantic melodrama, with plenty of comic touches. A Hong Kong film set in New York, starring Chow Yun-Fat and Cherie Chung.

A Better Tomorrow II (1987) **

A crime film by John Woo. Much weaker than his other films.

Eastern Condors (1987) **

Basically a Hong Kong remake of "The Dirty Dozen", with half a dozen hard-core criminals sent on dangerous military mission to Vietnam. Any film starring Samo Hung and Yuen Biao promises major kung-fu ass-kicking, but this one delivers memorable chop-socky goodies only in the last 10 minutes. Until then, it's just a boring, Rambo-like, jungle war movie, with plenty of gunfights and explosions.

Rouge (1987) *

Hong Kong melodrama.

City On Fire (1987) *

A really lousy crime film from Hong Kong, directed by Ringo Lam. It became famous in 1990's when "Film Threat" published an article falsely claiming that Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs" (1992) was a remake of "City On Fire". In reality, aside from a very brief scene with robbers pointing guns at each other, there are very few similarities between those two films.

The Man Who Planted Trees (1987) *****

One of the greatest animated films of all time, this Oscar-winning Canadian masterpiece combines excellent storytelling with innovative animation and a timely environmentalist message. It tells a beautiful story of an old goatherdsman planting thousands of trees in a desolate Alpine valley. An enormously uplifting praise of the human spirit, a veritable ode to selflessness, quiet determination, courage and lowliness. A magnificent achievement.

An Inside Job (1987) ****

A truly disgusting, truly brilliant and truly hilarious cartoon set in the mouth of a dentist's patient, who is robbed of his gold teeths by a clever sadist, who plants tiny explosives and retrieves the loot. Bizarre vocal impersonations (including Jack Nicholson's, who made his film debut in "The Little Shop Of Horrors" playing a masochistic patient who adores his visits to the dentist). A brilliant little film, but guaranteed to shock and disgust many viewers.

First, we see what happens in one person's life. Then, we see how those events would enfold had he never been born. An interesting little cartoon.

Your Face (1987) ***

Countless variations on human physionomy are presented in this simple cartoon. An Academy Award nominee.

Itinéraire (1987) ***

A series of portraits of women, drawn in different styles, from classical to cubist to abstract.

George And Rosemary (1987) ***

A shy man is in love with a lady living across the street. A nice cartoon nominated for an Oscar. It also received the Second Prize (short subject) at the Montreal Film Festival.

A great episode in the series, most memorable for this excellent summary of the British press:

Hacker: I know exactly who reads the papers. The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country; The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country; The Times is read by the people who actually do run the country; The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country; The Financial Times is read by people who own the country; The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country; and The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is.

Sir Humphrey: Oh, and Prime Minister, what about the people who read The Sun?

Bernard: Sun readers don't care who runs the country as long as she's got big tits.
