Being a silent movie, Erich von Stroheim's film adaptation of the famous operetta isn't as musically entertaining as the 1934 version starring Maurice Chevalier and Jeannette MacDonald, but it more than makes up for this sole shortcoming in every other area (the performances, the psychological depth of the characters, the quality of the mise-en-scène, the sexual tension, etc.)
