La Jetée (1962) ***

Difficult, but interesting film about a scientific experiment involving memory. The film uses still images to evoke a state of mind where past and present merge and where the recorded memory consists entirely of the photographed, immobile images. Set in the post-nuclear future, it's an avant-garde science-fiction film. Probably the only instance of an experimental short being an inspiration for a Hollywood blockbuster (1995's "12 Monkeys").
