Meandering, seriously overrated French pic about boring Parisian neurotics. Frequently interrupted by non-sequitur musical numbers, in which the protagonist lip-synch to classic songs, "Pennies From Heaven"-style. It unexpectedly won the Cesar Award for best film, beating "Le Bossu", a far superior film in every respect.

Smoking / No smoking (1993) *****

A movie about simple decisions that might have a crucial impact on one's life. A woman lights a cigarette, a man makes a date with his girlfriend, a husband says something nice to his wife. As result, one becomes either a vagabond or a successful businessman. There are twelve different outcomes. 

Contre l'oubli (1991) **

A compilation of 30 short films pleading on behalf of a political prisoner.

I Want To Go Home (1989) ***

An American cartoonist tries to find his daughter while attending an art exhibition in Paris. Screamingly funny comedy written by Jules Feiffer and directed by Alain Resnais. It's a sincere tribute to the American cartoon artists. One should absolutely avoid a horrendously dubbed French version, which doesn't make any sense, since the crucial point of the film relates to the American cartoonist's inability and unwillingness to communicate in French.

L'Amour a mort (1984) *

Alain Resnais' most difficult film, and that's saying something about the director of "L'Annee derniere a Marienbad" (1961), "Muriel ou le temps d'un retour" (1963) and "Providence" (1977). But unlike those earlier masterpieces, "L'Amour a mort" isn't just difficult, but extremely boring as well, though, to be fair, not nearly as boring as "Je t'aime je t'aime" (1968).

Je t'aime je t'aime (1968) *

Probably Alain Resnais' worst film, though "La Vie est un roman" (1983) and "L'Amour a mort" (1984) are also strong contenders for that dubious distinction. The film was selected at the 1968 Cannes Film Festival, but the director was so ashamed of it, he withdrew it from competition. Of course, he later pretended that he only did it to support the May 68 student revolt in Paris, but the real reason was undoubtedly the film's narrative and stylistic weaknesses.

Loin du Vietnam (1967) ***

Uneven, but fascinating French film about the Vietnam War. The most memorable segment has Jean-Luc Godard trying to explain to himself why the North Vietnamese government refused to let him enter their country. Alain Resnais' segment is by far the best, offering a different, and unexpected, perspective on that war. The other segments vary wildly in quality: everything from crude (and simplistic) Communist propaganda (especially the segment dealing with anti-war demonstrations in United States), to excellent (and very informative) Communist propaganda (particularly the segment shot by Joris Ivens in Hanoi about small anti-bomb shelters). Typical modernist film by Alain Resnais - almost impossible to follow narratively, but stylistically outstanding.

L'Année dernière à Marienbad (1961) ****

Difficult, pretentious, but visually mesmerizing art movie directed by Alain Resnais. The ultimate in Euro-chic cinematic snobbery, but extremely well made.
