The Sin Of Harold Diddlebock (1947) ***

Also known as "Mad Wednesday". Preston Sturges' weakest film ever, and one of Harold Lloyd's least impressive efforts as well. Uneven, with the second half much better than the first. And a possible inspiration for "The Hangover" (2009).

Hail The Conquering Hero (1944) ****

Classic Preston Sturges farce about a phony war hero returning to his home town.

The Miracle Of Morgan's Creek (1944) ****

Daring comedy about a war bride who not only gets drunk and pregnant, but also forgets who's the father. Hilarious from start to finish.

The Palm Beach Story (1942) *****

One of the funniest comedies ever made, a fast-paced screwball farce with excentric millionaires, runaway wives, gun-toting hunters aboard trains and other insane characters. The closest live-action films ever came to match the zany energy of Tex Avery's cartoons. A great masterpiece.

The Lady Eve (1941) *****

Uproriously funny comedy starring Henry Fonda as a rich biologist pursued by a smart girl (Barbara Stanwyck).

Sullivan's Tavels (1941) ****

An amazing film, expertly mixing slapstick comedy, screwball comedy and social drama. It's the story of a Hollywood director who becomes a hobo to discover the plight of the "forgotten man".

Christmas In July (1940) ***

Wacky farce about winning lots of money.

The Great McGinty (1940) ***

Comedy about political corruption.

While the Burgundian forces are besieging Paris, the King of France Louis XI (Basil Rathbone) names an outlaw and a poet, Francois Villon (Ronald Coleman), as the commander of his forces.

Easy Living (1937) ****

Rollicking farce written by Preston Sturges, starring Jean Arthur, Jack Arnold and Ray Milland. A masterpiece of screwball comedy.
