Castro Street (1966) *****
A masterpiece of experimental cinema, this careful, complex and beautiful film explores the formal properties of images and their structural transformations. The film relies heavily on superimpositions of similar images. Its montage technique is very ingenious - the movement within the frame often makes it invisible. Also interesting is the use of primary colours (especially reds and yellows), that slowly replace the original blue sepia tones. The use of negatives and the occasional deformations of images further enhance the visual complexity of this magnificent film. Directed by Bruce Baillie.
