A perfect example of a pure "fantastic" film - one that manages to maintain a fragile balance between its uncanny and supernatural elements. Aka "Stairway To Heaven".

The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp (1943) *****

This is Michael Powell's and Emeric Pressburger's masterpiece, a magnificent epic comedy charting almost half a century of British history from the Boer War to WWII. It was probably the first wartime film to conclude that the Second World War was fought against Nazism, and not against the German people.

One Of Our Aircraft Is Missing (1942) ***

A British bomber plane is shot down over Nazi-occupied Holland and its crew tries to avoid capture.

The 49th Parallel (1941) ***

Impressive war drama about a group of Nazi sailors escaping across Canada.

The Thief Of Bagdad (1940) ****

Colorful fantasy film based on "Arabian Nights" tales. It's not a remake of the 1924 Douglas Fairbank's film. The plot is completely different. Directors: Michael Powell and Tim Whelan. Ludwig Berger is listed as a co-director, but the black and white footage he shot was never included in the film.
