A Matter Of Life And Death (1946) ****
A British pilot (David Niven) jumps from his burning airplane without a parachute. He miraculously survives, or does he ? One of several films from 1940's that deal with matters of life and death (others include 1941's "Here Comes Mr Jordan" and "All The Money Can Buy", 1943's "Heaven Can Wait" and "A Guy Named Joe", as well as 1946's "It's A Wonderful Life"). A perfect example of a pure "fantastic" film - one that manages to maintain a fragile balance between its uncanny and supernatural elements. Aka "Stairway To Heaven".
