Book Revue (1946) *****
The culmination of the long series of Warner Bros. "books-come-to-life" cartoons, which began with "Three's A Crowd" in 1933, (itself a variation on Disney's "midnight-in-a-toyshop" format). Again, the film consists of short illustrations of many famous novels. The best moments belong to Daffy Duck, who steals the show with his frantic behavior, zany impersonations and nonsense songs (his wacky reendition of "Carolina In The Morning" is a blast). Best of all is the ending with Daffy hiding in "The Petrified Forest", while a wolf is brought by "The Long Arm Of The Law" to be sentenced to "Life" by a "Judge", only to make an "Escape", slip on "Skid Row" and fall into "Dante's Inferno"! It's a truly glorious piece of animated nonsense.
