This is the only original, written-directly-for-the-screen Rodger and Hammerstein's folk musical, all the others ("Oklahoma" in 1955, "The King And I" and "Carousel" in 1956, "South Pacific" in 1958, "Flower Drum Song" in 1961, and "The Sound of Music" in 1965) having been stage musicals first.
