Grace Kelly won an Academy Award as Best Actress for this film. There was a lot of controversy about whether or not she should have won it over Judy Garland in "A Star is Born", but it's almost an Oscar rule that every time a truly beautiful woman makes herself look plain for a role - like Elizabeth Taylor for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1966), Nicole Kidman for "Hours" (2002), Charlize Theron for "Monster" (2004) or Marion Cottilard for "La Vie en rose" (2007) - she is practically guaranteed to win an Academy Award.
