The Circus (1936) *

Boring and ridiculous Soviet film about an American circus performer seeking refuge in the Soviet Union. Directed by Grigori Alexandrov, this musical melodrama has none of the surrealistic anarchy of his "Jolly Fellows" (1934), nor the charm of his "Volga Volga" (1938). A sad failure.
