Mouse Wreckers (1948) *****
One of the funniest cartoons ever made, this Oscar-nominated gem has a simple concept, but its comic potential is fully realized through a cascade of increasingly side-splitting gags. The whole film concerns two mice (Hubie and Bertie) trying various stratagems to oust a poor cat from their dream house by driving him insane. Their methods include draging the cat (while asleep!) through ladder rungs, drain pipes, closed windows, piles of dishes etc. and reconstructing the living room upside down, forcing the poor animal to try to hang onto the floor (actually the ceiling!). Their efforts are quite effective, since the film ends with the cat suffering from a nervous breakdown, while Hubie and Bertie enjoy the coziness of their new residence.
